ABOUT SERVATHON

In the days leading up to and following Servathon on May 3, 2008, there will be several events. Learn about them here and sign up to participate!

Servathon 2008 — May 3, 2008

Servathon is a great opportunity to meet new people, see new parts of the region, and try something new. Servathon is also a fun way to spend time with family, friends and colleagues while providing service to your community. Servathon is a great place to get started volunteering or — if you have been a volunteer before — to try a new kind of project.

This year, Greater DC Cares has dedicated Servathon to the DC Public Schools as part of our “Volunteer for DC Public Schools” Campaign. We will mobilize more than 3,000 volunteers to complete 30–60 service projects at public schools around the district.

The day begins at 39 DC Public Schools, where volunteers will take part in a variety of service projects from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Everyone is invited to our after party full of fun, prizes, inspiration, beer and food from 1 to 4 p.m. Come in your paint-stained, muddy t-shirts and celebrate your day’s accomplishments and the impact you have had!

Citizen Academy Forum – DC School Readiness & Facilities – May 7, 2008

Following Servathon 2008, Greater DC Cares will host a Citizen Academy forum to discuss the DC school readiness and facilities through the lens of school partnerships. Speakers include: Mary Filardo, 21st Century School Fund; Ruth Jones, Communities in Schools; Jeff Smith, DC VOICE; and Brearn Wright, Clark Elementary. The Citizen Academy will be held from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at the Greater DC Cares offices.

If you are interested in attending the Citizen Academy Forum, please contact Mary Knighton-Brenner at mkbrenner@greaterdccares.org or 202-777-4445. As always, our event is free and open to the public. Space is limited, so please sign up as early as possible.

Board Leadership Program – Building Strong Parent/Teacher Support Organizations

Volunteer to help Schools Build Strong Parent/Teacher Support Organizations!
Greater DC Cares’ Board Leadership Program is sponsoring a training to help assist parents, teachers, and administrators in building a parent/teacher support organization.

We are currently seeking volunteers to work with our participants to help build parent/teacher support organizations. Each volunteer “project consultant” will be matched with an interested school to act as a project coach, and help to lead the participants through a step-by-step process.

If you have experience in organizational development, project management, or service as a member of a schools’ PTA/PTO and would like more information about this opportunity, please contact Greg at ghill@greaterdccares.org or 202-777-4463.

Pro Bono Consulting — Skilled Volunteering at DC Public Schools

How to Ace the Interview: An interactive workshop for students
Interviews skills are vital to securing an internship or a student’s first job, and our expert volunteers will be sharing helpful tips and techniques to help them best represent themselves to potential employers. This workshop will allow students to role play and receive constructive feedback, building their interviewing skills and confidence.

Technology Training for Teachers
Volunteers will be providing an informative workshop to elementary school teachers to help them improve their PowerPoint skills. This training will not only help with the teachers’ own presentations, but also help them develop vital technology skills in their students.

If you are interested in either of these upcoming trainings, or would like to discuss other skilled volunteering possibilities, please contact Kristen Carson-Owens at kcarson@greaterdccares.org or at 202-777-4454.

In-kind Donations — Book Drive!

Participate in the Servathon Book Drive!

Start collecting new or gently used books to donate to your Servathon school project site! Help provide much-needed books to help schools build their libraries and spread the joy of reading among their students.

Please bring books appropriate for the grade levels at your school site (elementary, middle, or high school). Books across all genres are accepted – fiction, nonfiction, biographies, dictionaries, thesauri, atlases, history, science, the arts, etc.

Some schools have provided a wish list of books for your reference, but they will happily accept books outside those listed.

If you have any questions about the book drive or if you’re interested in providing other in-kind donations, please contact kcarson@greaterdccares.org or 202-777-4454 for more information.

Join us at any and all of these events in the weeks before, during and after Servathon!
